The fifth heat of the 1981 Mastermind competition was held in the Great Hall at the University of Bradford, showcasing contestants from across the Midlands. John Mellor, a HGV driver, chose as his specialist subject The Battle of Waterloo. Peter Shilston, a freelance sports-writer, opted for Gangster Age in the USA, 1919-1939. Kate Williams, a teacher, selected the Life and times of Bess of Hardwick. And John Rose, an educationist, prepared for a profile of the Life and works of Chaucer.
