SEASON ONE: 10 Stars It’s not quite like Jessica Jones, but it’s also the best adaptation of The Punisher for film so far, even better than the 1989 version starring Dolph Lundgren, which many consider to be the strongest movie take on the character. I've noticed some people on IMDb have complained about the absence of superpowers and the violence in the series, but it seems they aren’t that familiar with the original stories. Because The Punisher is basically like Dexter—a killer who is only tolerated because he targets other criminals. He’s still a serial killer, though. And keeping that in mind, you're watching a show about someone who kills a lot of killers, and those killers are worse than he is. But unlike Dexter, he uses guns and doesn’t really worry about getting caught or the evidence he leaves behind. He’s simply a killer. And it just works; it’s executed well. The characters are also spot on. SEASON TWO: I gave Season 1 a perfect score of 10 stars. However, Season 2 made some choices that were so out of character for The Punisher that I had to lower my rating to 1. It fell into the same trap as Jessica Jones did. The first season was exceptional—not quite as good as the original Jessica Jones, but it captured the essence of The Punisher better than even some comic writers could have imagined (excluding MAX Comics, of course). Then, they introduced political themes, and unfortunately, those politics felt “woke.” With Jessica Jones, the politics weren't that important—they still harmed the show—but at least they aligned with the character. You can introduce left-leaning ideas to characters like Iron Fist, Luke Cage (to a degree), or Daredevil, who is defined by his Catholic faith, and it would still feel somewhat appropriate, although not as far left. They’re all essentially liberal characters... but The Punisher isn't a liberal character. The Punisher can’t be made “woke.” Jessica Jones can, but The Punisher is fundamentally a serial-killing, super conservative authoritarian. He's not a good person. He’s far to the right of Attila the Hun; he makes Trump seem like a liberal. That’s what defines his character—he’s an authoritarian figure. His conservatism is part of his personality. He’s more of a Neo-Con than Iron Man, more conservative than Mr. Fantastic...and Netflix tried to make him “woke.” This characteristic puts him at odds with many other Marvel characters, especially those who are very liberal, like Captain America. I understand that people who embrace progressive ideals can also be authoritarian…but it’s a form of authoritarianism that is the complete opposite of The Punisher's. So congratulations, Netflix: you ruined a really good show in two ways. Introducing politics into a series is frustrating when you’re trying to escape from the depressing news... but when those politics clash with the character’s core personality, it becomes a tragedy.
