There are definitely things to appreciate about the series. The actors largely work well together. Pelphrey and Stroup do a commendable job depicting corporate figures, managing to give them some dimension. And Wai Ching Ho, as is typical, demonstrates a remarkable talent for conveying subtle threats. However, Finn Jones’s portrayal of Danny Rand suffers from some truly unbelievable dialogue. He comes across more like an angsty adolescent than a mature adult burdened with significant duties. To make matters worse, the martial arts sequences are poorly executed, which contributes to noticeable shortcomings. Although I'm unfamiliar with the comics, I pictured Iron Fist as someone completely in command of his craft. His capabilities, though, clearly don’t align with the self-assurance he projects. The fight choreography lacks the forceful and graceful martial arts seen in shows like Daredevil or Ip Man. Jones’s movements often appear awkward. These elements make it even harder to buy into Jones's Danny Rand when he delivers seemingly random and vague philosophical statements that he himself doesn't appear to believe. Henwick fares better with her action sequences, possessing the sharpness, naturalness, and refinement one would anticipate from a lead character. She also brings sincerity and appropriate vitality to her role as trainer/social worker. It’s clear there’s promise in the story itself, but weak writing, some problems with the rhythm of events, and generally awkward fight scenes significantly detract from the overall quality of this production.
