Maken-Ki! Battling Venus (2011) is a peculiar thing. It’s clear from the cover alone that this is aimed at a specific audience – Seinen viewers. It seems like this production came before current trends in social media and what some consider to be overly sensitive content took hold in Western culture. Thankfully, it appears the East has avoided that issue; and I'm glad they did. The series initially attempted to establish a narrative during the first couple of episodes, but quickly pivoted to something much more appealing: fanservice. While it’s not always ideal when shows with characters possessing abilities rely on this approach, it actually works well here. I’ve encountered other Seinen titles that tried to subtly incorporate fanservice and ended up disappointing viewers. (_That Time I was Reincarnated as a Slime_ is one example). But when the creators fully embrace the fanservice element, it's quite enjoyable. The show isn't terrible considering its nature. There’s a male protagonist surrounded by a group of girls, but they aren’t all vying to be his girlfriend. There's an attraction present, and one girl finds herself competing with two others, seemingly worried about losing the boy she cares for more than just a friend. From that point on, the story unfolds through episodes focused on problems only these students, acting as their own protectors, can resolve. Both censored and uncensored versions of the series are available, and it's easy to follow along with either one. If you’re male, chances are you will enjoy this. Otherwise, it might be best to look for something that better suits your tastes. lol
