Hawkeye bristled at the account published by the sensationalist war correspondent, Clayton Kibbee, who’d presented reckless G.I. antics as acts of military bravery. Kibbee remarked, "Concerning those final two pints of blood, there was no grand conclusion, no heroes to be found. They simply aided an old soldier, a man who'd clung to visions of glory until the harsh reality of war – its tragedy and inhumanity – finally registered with him. Perhaps he’ll understand better in the future.”
