Locke and Key experiences shifts in focus, never quite establishing a stable feel. There are some strong episodes alongside truly weak ones, with many feeling like unnecessary padding reminiscent of a standard teen drama on Netflix. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what kind of show it is – does it aim for spooky horror, the style of *Glee* but more dramatic, a suspenseful thriller, or just a dull soap opera underscored by heavy-handed piano music? The answer seems to be all of those things, depending on which season or episode you’re watching. By the third season, the narrative goes completely off course after the first episode. A minor character's wedding suddenly becomes central, with no prior development or relevance to the plot; it simply appears out of nowhere. This is followed by overt political messaging and then a swift removal of that same character. The subsequent episodes are filled with drama and complaints, with the best moments being limited to the few minutes given to the main character. Around the middle point of season three, they begin to return to the core storyline, bringing back elements of thriller and horror. If you’re prepared to use the fast-forward button frequently, it might be worth a look.
