Gordo is convinced Mr. Pettus is deliberately assigning him "B" grades instead of the "A"s he deserves, a consequence of the teacher's evident dislike. This suspicion only deepens when the class takes an aptitude test, the results of which suggest Gordo's true calling lies in dealing blackjack.
