Liaison feels like a fairly conventional Western spy thriller. The movie uses a straightforward approach, presenting anyone against the West as inherently "bad," while portraying the West itself as morally upright. Syria is depicted negatively, overlooking some complicating details. For instance, it disregards the fact that Western involvement in Syria has largely been unlawful according to international law. Aside from the propagandistic elements, the plot follows a familiar spy thriller pattern, complete with exaggerated warnings about powerful hackers and assurances that those in power are working to ensure everyone's "safety"—even if it means disregarding fundamental human rights. Underneath this surface lies a rather dull spy drama centered on two characters and how their past actions affect what’s happening now. The performances are quite good, but it’s disappointing that they weren’t matched with a more inventive narrative.
