Synopsis

Beaver and Gilbert spent an afternoon at the carnival, where Beaver, to his own astonishment, won a fourteen-caret gold locket in a game of chance. He considered presenting it to June, but Gilbert’s counsel led him to a different decision: he would give the locket to a girl he admired. The generosity, however, proved ill-considered; it soon became clear that Beaver’s gift had caused a problem when the girl's parents discovered it.
