Giving a show or movie my top rating doesn't automatically mean I consider it flawless. However, with Last Tango in Halifax, I genuinely feel it comes remarkably close to perfection. The series was created and contributed to, to different extents, by Sally Wainwright. My partner and I consistently look for programs she’s involved with because they reliably deliver quality entertainment. Scott & Bailey, Happy Valley, and Gentleman Jack are outstanding examples of her work. The storyline feels somewhat familiar—two older individuals who missed their chance as a couple reconnect later in life and attempt to build something together. We've encountered this narrative before, even executed exceptionally well once (in As Time Goes By). But ultimately, it’s not the plot itself that matters; it’s how you handle it. The four main actors are all outstanding. There’s Derek Jacobi, a celebrated performer who might bring to mind Claudius or Cadfael; and Anne Reid, whom we initially encountered years ago in Coronation Street; Nicola Walker, appearing in many shows we've appreciated (Unforgotten, River); and Sarah Lancashire, who has impressed us in various roles—again, including Happy Valley—since her time on Coronation Street. And I should also mention that Sally Wainwright wrote for Coronation Street at one point. The supporting cast is equally impressive. Combining this with the strong writing, which blends drama, humor, and character development to draw you in and keep you engaged, reinforces my belief that the show is almost perfect. My only reservation concerns the last couple of seasons, which featured just two and four episodes respectively. However, two of the leads are in their eighties (though I doubt it hinders them much), and the other two have demanding schedules with other projects, so I’m grateful for what we received.
