It’s rare to find something that manages to fail in so many ways. The performances are dreadful, the special effects look cheap even by standards from the early nineties, and the dialogue is cringeworthy enough to embarrass hosts of Mystery Theatre 3000. The writing is poor, the story moves at a frustrating pace, and the sets are just plain bad—it delivers on every negative front. I’ve seen some discussion about how commendable it is that the young actress Zyra Gorecki took on the role of an amputee, but my wife actually said she was awful before leaving during the first fifteen minutes. I completely agreed with her assessment. Not long after that, I witnessed creature effects that felt like they belonged in a PlayStation 2 game. And when the story shifted to what they called "the other side," the acting, pacing and set design brought to mind low-budget science fiction films from the seventies—but without any of the charm or fondness those movies might have. If NBC intends to challenge the major streaming services, there’s a significant amount of improvement needed. The 52% score on IMDB seems far more accurate than the 80% rating found here.
