I stumbled upon Kino’s Journey while browsing for an anime on a friend’s server late one night, and after just four episodes, I was completely floored—it’s now my absolute favorite. It's become my current obsession, and I don't want anyone to interfere with it. Kino’s Journey is brief but makes you think. What requires some adjustment is realizing that the main character isn't a hero; they are an impartial presence who avoids getting deeply involved. The initial episodes do a good job of explaining their perspective, something the updated version doesn't quite capture. It prompted me to reconsider what heroism really means. Each episode presents a fresh location, a new narrative, and a different problem. The pacing is calm and deliberate, with a melancholic but tranquil feel; it’s very grounded. The structure resembles Star Trek, though it's less about space law enforcement, places less emphasis on resolving problems, and instead focuses on posing philosophical questions, occasionally letting Kino unleash their persuader. If you appreciate it, there's also positive representation of non-binary characters in anime. This aspect is more clearly presented in the initial OVA "in order to do something - life goes on."
