Synopsis

With no prospect of external funding and still embroiled in a bitter dispute with Johnny, Charles and Isabella felt the relentless squeeze as money for the viaduct dwindled and wages demanded payment. Following Charles’s announcement that salaries would be delayed, the navvy workforce erupted in fury and initiated a strike.
