Synopsis

The Ainu, an indigenous people inhabiting the northern regions of Japan, have long maintained a profound connection to the natural world as hunter-gatherers. This is the first of two explorations of the Ainu culture, focusing on the National Ainu Museum. Established in 2020, the museum serves as a vital center for safeguarding and celebrating Ainu traditions. We speak with Sasaki Shiro, the museum's Executive Director, who guides us through several exhibits and elucidates the institution’s aims.
