Synopsis

Kamishibai, or paper theater, is a storytelling tradition employing large illustrated cards. It enjoyed widespread popularity across Japan during the 1930s and continues to be cherished in kindergartens and libraries today. This program focuses on Kamishibai, featuring Sakai Kyoko who discusses the crafting of titles and the art of performance. Plus One presents American poet Arthur Binard, whose own Kamishibai work conveys the profound horror of the atomic bomb.
