The history of toilets in Japan stretches back two millennia. Contemporary models often boast heated seats and electronic bidets. Current developments include specialized designs for the elderly and those with infirmities, as well as portable units intended for post-disaster situations. Joining us is architect Shiohiko Takahashi, a foremost researcher and designer of toilets who has extensively surveyed public facilities across Japan.
