Jane Eyre presents a significant challenge for any adaptation; it requires skilled performers for the smaller parts, convincing young actors, and an intense Rochester who can captivate various women and elicit admiration from one of literature’s most iconic heroines. There have been many excellent portrayals of Rochester over the years—Orson Welles and William Hurt are just a couple of examples—and Toby Stephens might well join their ranks. The female cast members certainly seem to approve. However, Ruth Wilson may finally deliver a Jane Eyre that truly stands out. She’s an actress who possesses striking beauty without being merely attractive. She can convey sadness and emptiness, convincingly portray naivete, while still holding the passion needed for a powerful love story. Her poise and control are remarkable; subtle shifts in her expression are all that's necessary to communicate the emotions she's experiencing within. A key factor allowing it to unfold over four hours is Ruth’s ability to convey lengthy passages of dialogue with minimal changes in facial expression—she’s wonderful. The story moves along at a brisk pace, with Jane quickly entering and leaving Lowood within the first ten minutes. Yet, everything feels authentic. The chemistry between the two main characters is very believable as they connect and disconnect from one another. Would this be *the* definitive version? (Following the final episode) There’s no question—it is. It began exceptionally well and only improved with time. Numerous remarkable moments exist between the leads, not just in the major scenes. Consider Ruth Wilson's astonishing performance in the stairwell as she finds the strength to enter the tower room to care for Mason, contrasted with Toby's worry followed by his silent choice to have faith in her. Or his childishness when welcoming her back from Gateshead, transitioning into joy at Jane’s happiness about returning home. The final episode is truly unforgettable—as good as television can be. Truly magnificent.
