It's something that could have been knocked out in just a few days if I had really focused on it, but instead it took me over a month because I wasn’t particularly invested. My overall impression of the show is positive, though I think some of the praise surrounding it feels exaggerated. It stands apart from other Nickelodeon shows with its darker tone and has become something of an oddity in their catalog, even inspiring trips to Hot Topic. While I do appreciate seeing a more mature and graphic presentation in a series aimed at families, that element loses its impact after about a dozen episodes, likely because the network felt it had gone too far. The second episode features a disturbing scene where a child's eyes are removed, and then there’s “Dark Harvest,” which has unfortunately been linked to a real-world crime. However, if something inspires you to commit an act, you were probably going to do it anyway, and blaming the creators isn't fair since they had nothing to do with it. So, that initial appeal of the graphic darkness fades fairly quickly, leaving me wondering what else the show has to offer. I can talk about the characters, though. Zim is pretty good as the main character. I enjoy watching this ridiculously over-the-top and inept little alien repeatedly try and fail to conquer Earth, and it’s funny that he's despised by his own people because he messes everything up. My feelings about Dib are mixed; sometimes he’s really unlikeable and self-centered, but other times he can be quite entertaining. Gaz is also fun to watch, though the show doesn't give her many opportunities to shine. The same goes for Professor Membrane—his appearances are few, but his moments are hilarious. And of course, GIR. GIR is easily the best character in the whole series, and I understand why people love him so much. He’s just so endearing; watching him be himself is a joy, and I'd definitely buy a plushie. I’ve noticed that my favorite episodes tend to involve the Irken Empire itself, which made me realize the show doesn't really explore this alien race or their world very much, which was disappointing. Perhaps the comics go into more detail; who knows? The Tallest are occasionally amusing and it’s cute how their power comes from simply being taller than everyone else. I don’t have a lot left to say after that. It's a good show with enjoyable characters, cool visuals, and those initial dark moments, but some of the humor doesn’t quite land for me. My favorite episode is “Backseat Drivers from Beyond the Stars.” The weakest episode is "Bolognius Maximus." 3/2/23 Edit: I watched the pilot recently, and it was alright. It captured the style well enough, but the story felt very basic, and the voices for Zim and GIR just didn’t seem right for those characters. Also, Dib's teeth were really unsettling.
