This film is one of those where I suspect IMDb will delete your comments if they aren’t overwhelmingly enthusiastic. I honestly don’t get it; the original story was already quite forward-thinking. It centered on two gay vampires and their tumultuous separation—a narrative exploring themes of good versus evil, among other things, all handled with nuance and artistry. The key word there is "nuance," because that's entirely absent from the 2022 adaptation. The books don’t allow for sexual encounters between the vampires to heighten the tension and emotional turmoil. Apparently, in this version, they felt it wasn't progressive enough unless it resembled “9 ½ Weeks” but with vampires. Then they recast Louis, which necessitated altering the entire timeline of the story, creating some problems because, although the book contained a powerful message about liberating his enslaved people, that element was omitted from the film... …because apparently, when you’re trying to be progressive, logic doesn't matter. They also aged Claudia up, and this brought about considerable alterations that diminished what made her character so captivating. Ultimately, they transformed a lovely novel into low-budget fan fiction filled with politics and sex—and people are embracing it. It seems these days you can’t simply honor the original work; you have to tear it down.
