Having familiarized myself with Anne Rice’s vampire novels—enough to grasp her style, characters, and environments—I find that *Interview with the Vampire* fails to capture those elements. The portrayals of the characters feel wrong; they don’t possess the depth or subtlety she brought to them. I also think the historical setting feels inaccurate in several ways. What's more disappointing is the presence of political themes within this production, including what seems like a pointedly negative portrayal of Russia and an unnecessary infusion of progressive ideology. The performances are well-executed; it’s unfortunate that so much else goes wrong. It had potential if those involved had stayed truer to Rice's original material and avoided the intrusive messaging. Ultimately, despite its high production values and good acting, this series doesn't feel anything like Anne Rice’s work, at least in my opinion. The film from the nineties starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise remains the superior adaptation for me, as it genuinely embodies the spirit of her writing.
