I began watching this series because of three things. I’ve been fond of Alan Cumming since his performances in Circle of Friends and Emma, where he played characters you weren't supposed to like. Seeing him again in The Good Wife reminded me how much I enjoy his work. Also, we had signed up for CBS All Access to watch a few programs, so this seemed like an option too. I don’t usually look at reviews before deciding on something to view, except when there are many one-star ratings. That often indicates either the presence of several people of color or that gay/lesbian characters are portrayed in a way that feels genuine and positive. The latter turned out to be true for this show. A loving but commonplace gay couple likely bothered some viewers. I like police procedurals that balance ongoing investigations with cases resolved within a single episode. I believe the cast has good chemistry, and I was especially struck by how the tough-talking cop—the one who typically throws insults at people who are different, such as a gay couple—combined rough investigative work with acceptance of the two male characters. I considered that to be quite significant. I did feel that the Dylan character seemed overly clever at times, but it probably helps to wrap up the cases quickly. The dialogue occasionally felt a bit sentimental, though those moments didn’t last long. It brought to mind Midsomer Murders, which, despite their creative and disturbing murders, are generally appropriate for all ages.
