After revisiting the initial Inspector Gadget and subsequent versions—including Gadget Boy, Gadget & the Gadgetinis, and that unusual educational show—I’ve realized that Inspector Gadget just doesn't appeal to me. The basic idea of a clumsy robotic detective who relies on others to do all the real work never really clicked with me. I didn’t usually find Inspector Gadget particularly humorous or endearing enough to excuse his constant cluelessness and behavior in any of the shows I watched. It quickly became tiresome, and the series felt draining overall. Looking back, I wish Inspector Gadget had more similarities to Wallace from Aardman's _Wallace & Gromit_ shorts. They share a lot of common ground—both are mechanical creations who frequently find themselves in trouble, rescued by their animal companion. What makes Wallace so much more appealing is that he’s genuinely kind and charming, even though he’s often scatterbrained and unintentionally creates problems. I never tire of watching his antics because he's always entertaining. In contrast, Inspector Gadget is also a dim-witted character with advanced technology, but he’s overly confident and arrogant, frequently dismissing those who offer assistance to demonstrate how much more of an "expert" he is—only for them to secretly complete his work for him. Typically, characters like this face some sort of comedic consequence, but the series reverses that formula: Gadget consistently causes problems for everyone around him, whether it's accidentally sending Chief Quimby’s explosive messages, mistaking M.A.D agents for innocent people and unintentionally injuring them, or misidentifying Brain as a M.A.D agent, then receiving praise for a "job well done." That would be acceptable if Inspector Gadget were an engaging and likable character beyond his mistakes, but he isn’t, at least not to me. He's like Wallace stripped of all charm, becoming as much of a burden for the viewers as he is for those around him. Wallace experiences consequences from his actions, whether intentional or accidental, so I don't connect with Gadget’s seeming invulnerability when he’s a less enjoyable character overall. This applies to some degree in the other versions—Gadget Boy, Gadget & the Gadgetinis, and the 2015 reboot—but my focus was primarily on the original series.
