I loved the original _Inspector Gadget_ animated series from 1983; it was one of my favorites. But this 2015 revival is really bad, possibly even worse than the live-action movie Disney made in 1999. After watching a few episodes, I felt pretty let down. The writing seems geared toward very young kids and lacks any real feeling, and the stories feel hurried. A big issue with this new version is that Gadget’s niece Penny gets way too much attention; she's essentially positioned as the main character, while Gadget hardly matters at all. Even though he’s the star of the show, his personality has been exaggerated to the point where he’s become a minor and easily forgotten character. It feels like a trick. I also think Dr. Claw has been diminished; he comes across as silly, immature, and not very scary anymore. Adding a nephew for him just doesn't make sense. In the original series, Dr. Claw seemed capable enough to operate on his own while still using other people to do his dirty work. Plus, this nephew, Talon, is incredibly arrogant and irritating, and his complicated relationship with Penny feels unoriginal and forced. I get that they wanted a rival for Penny, but Talon doesn't seem to belong in the story or the franchise. Each episode follows the same pattern: Dr. Claw does something bad for really simple and childish reasons, then Penny and Brain handle everything effectively while Gadget just randomly manages to save the day by chance, over and over again. The writing also feels fake, relying on shallow jokes and tired plot devices instead of genuine humor or character development. To make things worse, Penny’s new friend Kayla is equally unpleasant, and seasons 3 and 4 made me completely lose interest. I've read other negative reviews about this reboot, and I agree with what they say. Overall, the 2015 _Inspector Gadget_ reboot is incredibly weak and disappointing; it makes the 2017 _DuckTales_ reboot seem amazing by comparison.
