I have to admit something upfront: even though I'm forty years old and "iCarly," the popular Nickelodeon sitcom, is technically geared toward a younger audience, I honestly believe it’s currently the funniest comedy on television. Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove) is a junior high student living in Seattle with her older brother, pop artist Spencer (Jerry Trainor). Their father is serving in the military overseas, and they share a large three-story loft apartment that includes an elevator. Carly's best friend, Sam (Jennette McCurdy), who’s something of a budding troublemaker, lives with them as well; her mother hasn’t been seen yet. They also hang out with Freddie (Nathan Kress), a tech expert whose affection for Carly is well known. The series follows Carly, Sam, and Freddie as they webcast their internet show "iCarly," documenting their rising popularity and everyday experiences at school and home. The DVD includes thirteen episodes from the first season, plus some bonus features. I’ve listed each episode individually (they originally aired in 2007 and 2008), along with a brief review and my IMDB.com rating (on a scale of 1 to 10). DISC ONE iPilot (written by Dan Schneider, directed by Steve Hoefer) This pilot episode explains how Carly, Sam, and Freddie started their webcast, introducing sympathetic Principal Franklin (Tim Russ) and the mean teacher Miss Briggs (played hysterically by Mindy Sterling). Despite some initial awkwardness (Freddie’s high-pitched voice disappears later on), I found it consistently funny. 7/10. Favorite line: "Yeah, except he doesn't have Miss Briggs' crazy pointy boobs." iWant More Viewers (written by Steve Holland & Steve Molaro, directed by Adam Weissman) Freddie and Spencer compete to come up with the best way to increase viewership. It’s hilarious from beginning to end, especially the "Messin' With Lewbert" segment. 9/10. Favorite line: "Pee on Carl?" iHatch Chicks (written by Steven Molaro, directed by David Kendall) A science experiment goes wrong, and Carly, Sam, Freddie, Spencer, and Freddie’s project partner Duke have to find six baby chicks in the apartment. The show is consistently funny, with many memorable lines. My seven-year-old son's reaction to seeing Miranda Cosgrove in a swimsuit? "Carly's hot." 9/10. Favorite line (it was hard to choose): "Wow, I’ve never seen dried beef make a boy so happy." iDream of Dance (written by Dan Schneider, directed by Adam Weissman) The “iCarly” team opens their site to dance videos and receives over three thousand submissions. The trio watches a few hundred, falls asleep, and dreams themselves into some well-choreographed routines. The music is fun, the backup dancers are great, and Trainor’s final dance made this my favorite episode of the first season. 10/10. Favorite lines (I couldn't pick just one): "How dare you children boo a dancing Scotsman!," “Because I move my legs in a fiery explosion of flailing limbs and floppy passion, wanna see it?,” "If he's a nub, then someday I want to be Mrs. Carly Nub," "Get out of here, Gibby, this is my nightmare!," and "Oh, Juiceboy’s got a friend." iLike Jake (written by Dan Schneider, directed by Steve Hoefer) When the hottest guy in school, Jake, breaks up with his girlfriend,
