As someone with an interest in historical topics, I tend to notice when something related appears on Netflix, and that’s how I came across _History 101_. It’s a ten-part series employing archival film clips and animated graphics to explore different subjects each episode, which runs roughly twenty-five minutes. The episodes focus on things like fast food, the competition in space exploration, China, plastics, oil, robots, feminism, nuclear power, AIDS, and genetics. Considering how brief the individual installments are and the wide range of topics they attempt to address, this series prioritizes presentation over depth. While it’s visually appealing and modern-looking, it moves too quickly to offer any real substance or provide more than a cursory overview of each subject. The frequent use of animated graphics contributes to an almost juvenile feel; these elements swoop in and out with such speed that they often obscure the information being presented. What I did appreciate was the inclusion of some truly remarkable archival footage – this proved to be the most enjoyable aspect. Some clips were exceptionally clear, and I encountered many I hadn't seen before, even regarding subjects I’m already familiar with. That’s a definite highlight, but it’s essentially the only positive thing I can say about the series. I imagine this would suit younger viewers or teenagers well. Because it merely scratches the surface of these various topics, those who are genuinely interested in history won't find much here to expand their knowledge.
