The name includes "EVOLUTION," which seems like it should be the focus. It’s oddly divided into sections—East and West, Chicago, Atlanta—and so on. That kind of fragmented approach doesn't really work for someone who isn’t already familiar with hip-hop but enjoys music in general and wants to understand its development. You pick up bits and pieces of information here and there, like where it came from—its funk origins—or how many well-known artists got their start at specific venues, or the connection to the Black Panthers. However, that information isn't presented so you can watch and grasp how hip-hop developed into what it is today. I grew up in the nineties, so I understand the East Coast/West Coast rivalry; that makes sense. But I also know that hip-hop had to have a beginning and go through changes to even reach that point, and seeing that progression was why I decided to watch. It’s great to learn things about an art form I don't normally focus on, but it would have been better if the series had explained how hip-hop evolved as a complete entity before breaking it down by region.
