I found Hinterland to be generally enjoyable and well-crafted. The narratives kept me engaged, and I developed an attachment to the investigative team he collaborates with. However, DCI Mathias runs the risk of becoming a familiar figure—a detective grappling with personal issues who frequently disregards protocol, creating difficulties for both his superiors and family. He doesn't fully embody that tired trope, though, because he has a positive connection with his daughter and generally gets along well with his colleagues. And at least he appears to feel remorse for his errors, which primarily involve how he deals with suspects and witnesses. A lot of police procedurals either wrap up a case each episode or stretch the investigation across an entire season. Hinterland takes a different approach; the storyline of at least one crime spans all three seasons, while others are concluded. These ongoing plot threads recede into the background but remain present, occasionally resurfacing in subtle ways to become significant again later on. I also appreciate the locations used in this series. I do suggest watching this show, but if you already have several excellent mystery shows that you enjoy, I wouldn’t prioritize it above those.
