Richard Boone portrays Palladin, a gunslinger who identifies himself with a card reading “Have Gun, Will Travel.” When this series aired, Palladin was considered an advanced and progressive figure, even viewed that way in the sixties, seventies, and particularly now. Like many television programs of its time, it presented corrupt individuals as white men, a characteristic especially noticeable here. Many viewers today aren’t aware of this, but this depiction was typical for Westerns during the fifties, including those on TV. A flaw with Palladin's character was his tendency to interfere in situations, even when he chose to get involved. He seemed driven by a desire to act as judge and jury. Within the show’s narrative, he is consistently correct, but this approach resulted in something akin to contemporary “scapegoating.”
