GyeongSeong Creature explores a disturbing period of history largely unfamiliar to Western audiences: Japan’s experimentation on people. It's unsettling to discover how much of what’s depicted in this series is based on actual events. This grim setting serves as the foundation for a Korean horror story that brings to mind Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and various Lovecraftian narratives. The narrative highlights not only the atrocities of involuntary medical testing, but also other troubling facets of imperialism. While the central storyline proved engaging, I found the visual effects for the monster or creature didn't quite feel convincing, which lessened the series’ overall effect. The character development seemed inconsistent; characters portrayed as clever and strategic frequently behaved in ways that felt illogical. Despite these shortcomings, this remains a generally worthwhile horror experience for those who can handle it. Ultimately, GyeongSeong Creature is an adequate but not remarkable series from South Korea, combining historical darkness with fantasy and horror themes. It also offers some commentary on the costs of imperialism for those who are subjected to it; it’s worth checking out.
