It’s similar to American Horror Story; that’s essentially what you should expect. Some of the AMS seasons connect with me, while others don't resonate quite as well. I notice that when Ryan Murphy attempts to deviate from his established style, he often misses the mark. Niecy Betts is a fantastic lead, and it's rewarding to see her given room to develop a character fully—she’s genuinely remarkable in this show, supported by a talented ensemble, especially Goodwin and Diamond. I appreciate the campy elements, but roughly halfway through the season there’s a completely illogical, out-of-place, and frankly uncomfortable musical sequence that made me visibly cringe; I felt bad for the actors involved. Then Murphy tries to change things up with a rather awkward plot twist—is it supposed to be a dream? Seriously? At this point in the season? It would have been fine if the series had begun with that kind of concept, but introducing it after you've become invested and there’s something at risk feels really clumsy. I almost quit watching altogether around then, but decided to see how things played out. It easily could have earned an 8 or even a solid 7, but it was still a waste of time.
