I was captivated by the novel; in fact, back when I was in college, I became known as the person who could identify the classical composers referenced in its parodies of popular songs. It struck me as one of the funniest stories I’d encountered. It had been some time since my last reading, but I don't recall it coming across as overly sophisticated. However, the television adaptation comes off as pretentious; the humor doesn’t land particularly well, and it isn't a wildly funny satire that resonates on several different levels—it just seems affected. The book seemed accessible to a wide audience, whereas the show gives the impression of being intended for a select few. Frankly, I find that disappointing because I was genuinely looking forward to seeing it adapted.
