Synopsis

In York, Anne finds a welcome affirmation from Doctor Belcombe: she is precisely the remedy for Ann Walker's delicate constitution. But when news of a loss reaches Cliff Hill, Ann’s anguished response stirs suspicion within Anne. It hints at hidden depths and unspoken truths in her friend's past. Meanwhile, as her competitive spirit with Christopher Rawson intensifies, Anne begins to formulate ambitious plans – to reopen the abandoned coal mines and to sink a shaft of her own.
