Synopsis

The Russian advance is halting the German offensive, inflicting heavy losses. Wilhelm is wounded and abandoned. Awakening to find himself near a lake, he takes refuge in a secluded cabin and lives alone for several weeks. Eventually, he is discovered by the German Army and condemned for desertion. Friedhelm returns home, but witnessing his father’s grief at what appears to be Wilhelm's death, coupled with a lack of gratitude for his survival, he re-enlists.
