The writing is harsh, violent, crass, and cunning—and those are just initial impressions. The visuals, music, and rhythm combine to create impressive storytelling, blending horror elements with fantasy adventure and constant betrayals. However, all of this would be wasted if not for what appears to be the finest casting ever assembled. Lena Headey’s portrayal of a quietly spoken Cersei is remarkable, as is Peter Vaughan's depiction of the elderly Maester Aemon; every character feels richly developed and authentic. It’s possible that Peter Dinklage had to make a significant sacrifice to secure this part—I’ve simply never witnessed such a perfect match, not just in physical stature (though that’s noticeable), but also in how his gaze communicates clever self-importance along with unrestrained indulgence.
