Synopsis

The film follows renowned New Yorker writer and Boston surgeon Atul Gawande as he explores the complex relationships between physicians and patients facing the end of life. In tandem with his book, *Being Mortal*, the documentary examines the care of the dying, revealing how doctors—including Gawande himself—are often surprisingly unprepared and uneasy discussing chronic illness and mortality with those under their care.
