News of Bear’s accomplishment – teaching little Beatrice to count to five – spurred Franklin to begin his own lessons with Harriet. He arranged a structured session for her, encompassing everything from numbers to painting. Yet, a growing discouragement settled upon him as it appeared Harriet absorbed little from his efforts.
