I'm really let down by this series. I’m familiar with the books—I’ve read them several times—and I understand that no film version can possibly include every detail and subtlety from the source material. That wasn't my expectation, but I was surprised by some absurd alterations that serve absolutely no purpose. What began promisingly has quickly become unwatchable. Initially, it seemed like the series might handle the story of the Foundation respectfully, but then it squandered a great deal of time on elements completely absent from the books, such as emperors who are clones. They feature characters from the novels, yet inexplicably feel compelled to change many of them—often turning them into women or inserting overt displays of homosexuality that seem mandated by some recent law requiring this in every new program. What's offensive isn’t the content itself, but the fact that it wasn't part of the original books; it seems like someone with poor judgment is simply trying to make a statement about current social and political issues. By the time the Traders appear, the core idea of how the Foundation developed methods for interacting with other planets has been completely lost or disregarded. With such a significant departure from the narrative, there's not much reason left to keep watching.
