The series attempts to emulate the styles of Ford or Peckinpah, but ultimately settles into something resembling Whedon’s work. The actors have a strong rapport with each other, creating an environment where shifts in tone are possible, though this is constrained by dialogue that is overly self-aware and characters whose journeys follow familiar patterns, culminating in emotional payoffs instead of genuine understanding. The technical aspects—including the visual effects, cinematography, direction, and production design—fall short of what was expected for its genre and era. It could have potentially improved with additional seasons to develop further, but considering later revelations about Whedon’s conduct, it's probably fortunate that it didn't continue.
