Synopsis

Confronted by her own failings, Maud understood that she had to flee Mrs. Sucksby if she hoped to save Sue. She managed to slip away and sought out an old business acquaintance of her uncle’s, but he refused her assistance and turned her from his door. Alone in the labyrinthine alleyways and streets of London, oblivious to the perils that surrounded her, Maud became vulnerable to those who would exploit her, and she reluctantly realised she had no alternative but to return to Lant Street.
