Synopsis

Having arranged for Sue’s departure, Rivers brought Maud to London and into the care of Mrs. Sucksby. It was there she discovered the truth: Mrs. Sucksby had orchestrated both her escape and Sue’s ruin. A persistent unease settled upon Maud, a questioning of how she had treated Sue and the carefully constructed facade of a life she'd presented. The reality was far harsher; Maud was an orphan raised by a cruel uncle who had inflicted emotional abuse and fostered a chilling detachment within her.
