Caruso’s landlord issued a stark ultimatum: the coffee house would become a parking lot if Bruno couldn't secure acceptance for his promising young opera singer companion at the School of the Arts. Separately, Mr. Shorofsky arranged a clandestine meeting with Mrs. Berg.
