In Tokyo, we shadowed a rat extermination company. Each early spring brings as many as a thousand requests for their services, and they labor tirelessly, around the clock, to eradicate the rodents. Their calls originate from a diverse range of locations: restaurants in vibrant districts, residential apartments, schools, hospitals, and even temples and embassies. In the most serious instances, rats gnawing on electrical wiring can disrupt phone and internet service. Redevelopment initiatives and
