As October draws to a close, twenty thousand people of every age and nation converge on the central crossroads of Tokyo’s Roppongi district for Halloween celebrations. Costumes span a wide spectrum, from familiar U.S. presidents to beloved figures from Japanese anime. Among the revelers are young men who don masks to find the courage to speak with women, and a barber who cultivated his hair for a year as an integral part of his disguise.
