Synopsis

Sunlight filters through the trees onto the ancient stone path of the Kisoji, a mountain route linking Nagano and Gifu Prefectures. A vital artery during the Edo period, it now draws travelers from every corner of Japan and beyond. On an eight-kilometer hike, three families strolled along its length. A runner pounded the uneven trail, while others sought solitude and quiet contemplation. For three days in early summer, we spoke with those who journeyed upon this historic road.
