I’ve been watching Doctor Who since the 1970s, including all of the original episodes, the film, and every episode of the 2005 series. I'm familiar with the highs and lows that come with being a fan. The time between the old show ending in 1989 and the new one starting in 2005 was disappointing, but the stories beginning in 2005 seemed promising and held my attention. They quickly surpassed the original series, and those early episodes were quite fun, very entertaining, and left me wanting to see more. However, as Peter Capaldi’s run as the 12th Doctor progressed, I began to notice a gradual decline in the quality of the stories. While there were still some good moments, things generally seemed to be heading downward. This continued during Jodie Whittaker's time as the 13th Doctor, with her regeneration happening at what felt like a particularly weak point for the series. David Tennant’s return as the 14th Doctor, which was certainly nostalgic, didn’t deliver stories that matched his earlier run as the 10th Doctor. It's become increasingly clear that the show is now prioritizing pushing certain ideas onto viewers over telling good stories. The writers seem to be sacrificing what makes the show work in order to promote specific agendas, turning it into a vehicle for those messages instead of a platform for compelling and intelligent storytelling. The increased use of flashy graphics, explosions, and elaborate sets feels like an attempt to distract from these underlying problems—like putting lipstick on a pig. After thinking about it carefully, this most recent episode helped me decide to stop watching Doctor Who, because I expect things will only continue to get worse. Maybe the series needs another long break, similar to what happened between 1989 and 2005, so that they can refocus on what made the show special—its captivating storytelling.
