It feels like I’ve encountered this story before. Department Q... [PONDERS] Was this already a film?! After watching the initial episode, I was puzzled because I clearly remembered something similar happening with [INSERT EPISODE 1 SPOILERS]. I spent roughly an hour debating whether to continue watching since I'm familiar with the general storyline from seeing the movie adaptation some time ago. Ultimately, I decided to proceed due to the quality of the actors involved. I’m not at the end of season 1 yet and I can confidently say that even if you’ve seen the film version, it’s still worth watching the series; it's well-acted and produced effectively. "MovieGuys" made a point in their review about the show struggling with how they portray the main character, "Morck." What “MovieGuys” seems to have missed is that the author of the original novels didn’t like those initial films, partly because the characters deviated from his intended portrayal. After the fourth film, there were changes – both a recast and new creative leadership. Don't let any fondness you might have for the first movie (or any of the first four) – as successful as they were – prevent you from appreciating the acting in this series. "Morck" remains a “meticulously obsessive, crime solver," but he’s also someone with an inflated sense of self and problems managing his temper. **SPOILERS AHEAD:** I concur with "Darryl Oliver's" observation regarding Lyle Jennings. It seems to me that Merrick would have recognized him; some people change drastically due to weight fluctuations, but Lyle’s build didn’t alter significantly—he simply aged and gained muscle mass. I anticipate future seasons because I don’t remember having seen any of the movies beyond the first one, and I haven't read the books.
