Dancing with the Stars returned for its seventeenth season on September 16, 2013, welcoming back beloved hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke Charvet alongside judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, and Bruno Tonioli. Season seventeen marked a significant shift for the series; it was the first time since the inaugural season to forgo a dedicated results show. Viewers also noticed a change in the ballroom’s layout – the familiar sky-box interviews with Brooke Burke Charvet disappeared, replaced by a new seating area adjacent to the judges' table, which itself had been repositioned across the dance floor. To facilitate more intimate conversations, a new make-up and rehearsal space was created for Charvet to connect with the couples both before and after their performances. This season also brought an updated voting system into play. Each week, couples will perform and receive scores from the judges, evaluating everything from technique to artistry. With no results show separating performance from elimination, those judge's scores are combined with the previous week’s viewer votes. The couple facing the lowest total score – a true reflection of both professional critique and public enthusiasm – will then be announced as departing the competition later in that episode.
