"Dalgliesh" seems to be imitating a detective series from the nineteen seventies. Although it includes all the expected elements of a show from that era—the clothing styles and even collar sizes large enough to use as plates—the viewpoints expressed are very modern, reflecting current progressive values in the United Kingdom. This creates a series that isn’t bad, but doesn't quite ring true. The issue stems from the usual diversity, equity, and inclusion elements, which simply weren’t present during that time. It’s like creating a program about Henry VIII who wears a digital watch while celebrating Pride Day; it would be difficult to pull off. Aside from this flaw, the main actor does a commendable job portraying Dalgliesh. The quiet, contemplative man of letters who also happens to be an exceptional detective is fully realized. The crime stories themselves, which each unfold over two episodes, were uneven in quality. Some were engaging, while others felt like typical mystery plots. One pair of episodes seemed slightly unfinished and could have benefited from more detail. Overall, the acting is excellent; the lead actor truly embodies the part. However, the nineteen seventies setting feels out of place because of the characters' contemporary attitudes. The crime stories vary considerably, ranging from very good to average.
