Synopsis

Following an inspection of their feet, Mainwaring declared the platoon needed toughening up and suggested a combination of barefoot football and a twenty-mile route march. The men, eager to avoid the latter, devised a scheme: they would swap his newly ordered boots for a smaller size, hoping the discomfort would deter him. They hadn’t accounted for the fact that he already had a pair undergoing repair at the shoemaker's, which were returned just before the planned march.
