Synopsis

Mainwaring was deeply frustrated to find that the platoon – all except for Godfrey, who couldn't keep pace – had expended their entire supply of ammunition attempting, unsuccessfully, to bring down a low-flying German aircraft. An investigation was promptly initiated, accompanied by a fresh shipment of ammunition which arrived as expected. The captain presiding over the inquiry, held in the church hall and competing with choir rehearsals, considered the exercise largely pointless but nonetheless
